Vector-borne diseases are illnesses that are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected insects, known as vectors. Two common vector-borne diseases in our region are malaria and dengue. These diseases can pose serious health risks, but with the right knowledge and timely action, you can protect yourself and your loved ones.
What Are Malaria and Dengue?
Malaria is caused by parasites that are transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. Dengue, on the other hand, is caused by a virus spread by Aedes mosquitoes. Both diseases are prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas, including our own Varanasi.
Signs and Symptoms
It’s important to recognize the symptoms of these diseases early:
Malaria: Symptoms usually appear 10-15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. They include:
- High fever
- Chills
- Sweats
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Muscle and joint pain
Dengue: Symptoms typically appear 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and can include:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Pain behind the eyes
- Joint and muscle pain (often referred to as “breakbone fever”)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Skin rash
- Mild bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, gum bleeding)
- Preventing Malaria and Dengue
Prevention is the best approach to managing vector-borne diseases:
Avoid Mosquito Bites: Use insect repellent containing DEET, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and use mosquito nets while sleeping.
Eliminate Breeding Sites: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Ensure there is no standing water around your home by regularly emptying containers, cleaning gutters, and covering water storage.
Use Mosquito Screens: Install screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
Getting Tested
If you experience symptoms of malaria or dengue, it’s crucial to get tested early. Early diagnosis can lead to prompt treatment and a better recovery. At our diagnostic and laboratory center in Varanasi, we offer the following tests:
For Malaria:
Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT): Provides quick results by detecting malaria antigens in the blood.
Microscopic Examination: Involves examining a blood smear under a microscope to identify malaria parasites.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR): A more sensitive test that detects malaria DNA in the blood.
For Dengue:
Dengue NS1 Antigen Test: Detects the dengue virus antigen in the blood, particularly useful in the early stages of infection.
Dengue IgM and IgG Antibody Test: Identifies antibodies produced in response to dengue virus, indicating recent or past infection.
Complete Blood Count (CBC): Helps monitor the blood’s platelet count, which can drop significantly in dengue.
